Lift off !!! and Why do you collect!?!

Disc Golf Website Launch

Exciting news! Disc.Golf.cards is now live!

This project has truly been a passion of mine, offering a platform to share my collection and connect with fellow disc golf enthusiasts through buying, selling, and trading. While collecting Disc Golf cards is relatively new to many, it's a vibrant community worldwide.

If you're just discovering it, welcome aboard! Visit our About Us page to learn more about my journey and check out the questions I've posed to our fellow disc golf card community on how they got into cards. 15 Collectors responded!

Questions:

1. How long have you been collecting disc golf cards?
2. Why do you collect disc golf cards?

Collector 1

Started playing in 2017, went to MVP open in 2018, and saw some sets of 2017 cards for sale on the table but passed on them.  Instead buying a dgpt polo and some discs.  The following year I bought 4 sealed 2019 sets from Marshall Street.  I've been collecting sets since from dgpt.  Picked up a few gatekeepers and the Brixton OTB first releases.  The hobby boxes and subsequent dgpt releases have ramped up offerings and collecting.  I like that Brixton is still looking to produce products like complete base sets that are affordable alongside rarer specialty items.

Collector 2
Only since the release of Brixton gold era so what less than a year? Because I love disc golf and I feel it’s much more unique than collecting any other card since the sport is so small still and the community is great!

Collector 3
Since the 2016 DGPT set, Brixton escalated it dramatically with Golden Era. 2. I’ve always had something that I’m collecting and enjoy the hunt. On top of my passion for the sport, I also look at it as an investment as the market grows. It’s also a way for me to stay more engaged with the sport while I’m not able to play as much as I’d like.

Collector 4
About a year before Brixton, collecting some older cards, fav players. Brixton was an amazing surprise and escalated cards for me. 2. It brought back the nostalgia of collecting baseball cards as a kid. I love almost all things disc golf, so the card aspect is cool. Glad to have a mix of cool things coming.

Collector 5
Been collecting DG cards Since the OTB set was announced. Always thought the original dgpt sets were kind of bland, then Brixton came along and changed the game. 2. It’s fun! The value in the dg boxes, especially GE, exceeds anything in baseball these days. Also really cool to see the local pros I watched grow in the sets, and the whole pro game is much more accessible than other major sports. And the community of collectors is great!

Collector 6
Since the OTB set was announced 2) I collected sports cards in the late 80's / early 90's as a kid, then moved into Magic: The Gathering until my early 20's. I'm a nerd and collectable things appeal to me, so I was compelled to dive into Brixton when the OTB set was announced since I would be getting in on the ground floor.

Collector 7
Nov 22, 2022 - discovered the cards... ordered... received them on September 1, 2023. I hoped to be the first collector in Estonia - I wasn’t. When I was little I collected a lot of things - now it's grown-up money - and I can go again, of course I hope that one day they will be worth some money too!

Collector 8
Since the Golden Era Pre-order 2022. The community of disc golf collecting is so much fun. It's more than buying a card, there is a community with people to trade with. I also feel more connected to the players in disc golf than MLB or NHL.

Collector 9
Since golden era release. I bought one box of golden era to support Ryan after talking with him in person. I’ve never collected anything before and did not know what to expect. Golden Era is so good I had to have more and couldn’t stop. I love ripping packs. Pure fun.

Collector 10
Since Brixton GE. I got back into sports cards hard in 2018 through eBay breaks and the LCS but by 2021, the pandemic boom, the cost, and the horrible quality coming out of Panini and Topps had pretty much pushed me out. A conversation with my wife's cousin had me turn to buying more vintage and modern singles around 2022 then this thing called Golden Era came along. For the price of a new hobby box of Topps Baseball (with one relic OR auto, usually from some scrub pitcher) I can get 5 autos of athletes that I am familiar with, on card; the relics are event used and come with a backstory. The numerous variations and parallels are amazing. The cards are beautiful, the photography is great, the COMMUNITY is like no other. I love baseball and football, but I can't go to a game and have a conversation with a player afterwards. That's common place in DG and it's amazing from a fan standpoint. And honestly, the value of DG cards is not that far behind the big sports.

Collector 11
I had not bought any trading cards since I used to take my son to Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments. I would play occasionally but I never had any sports cards. When Aaron, from OTB, tweeted a video of Ryan showing the base card set. That's when I first saw disc golf cards. I bought them that same day at the tournament. I started following Brixton on Twitter. I Bought the presale OTB box then joined the boardroom for Golden Era release, and I haven't looked back. I'm so grateful for the community and glad I have friends all over the country.

Collector 12
Started with Golden Era. I knew about a handful of cards existing like the A&G McBeth but not to the extent that was out there. 2) Pretty much about the same as above, I see it as an investment as well as being a way to stay involved in card collecting. I love the limited run of the cards and that it hasn't become a huge, mass-produced product that makes the community more like a community rather than a card hunt like baseball card collecting is now.

Collector 13
I started collecting DG in 2021 (DGPT cards) but really ramped up after the OTB Brixton set came out. I’ve always been a collector and still have a crazy comic book collection. I collect because I love the sport/players and for future value. Being a part of the collecting community is the icing on the cake.  There is no sport like disc golf and with the new card sets over the past couple years (relics/autos), it’s the best time to get into it.

Collector 14
Honestly, I picked up the game in 2013 to help me with my health, I was over 400 pounds and needed to find something to help. Here it is 11 years later and I'm down 130 pounds. Discovered there were pros playing in 2017 and went to my first tournament last year. OTB. I saw the 2023 dgpt set and bought a box. I used to collect baseball and football as a kid in the 80s and lost all those cards due to a robbery. Then saw the Brixton golden era set and fell in love. I wanted something smaller than a bag of 50 discs to get signed by my favorite players and the cards fit the bill. Light, small easy to carry. Those Brixton boys have brought back the excitement of card collecting again, and this sport still allows for great fan and pro interaction. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

Collector 15
Since I discovered Avery Jenkins had cards in Allen and Ginter in 2010. Lifetime baseball card collector dating back to early 1980s that quit during college, spent too much after i got a real job, and then quit again for another decade. Its disc golf cards only for me now. I love the history that cards tell and want to host a disc golf trading card museum at my private course/country club someday.

Wrap up:
The response to the questions has revealed several prominent themes. Brixton's impact has revolutionized the game, attracting numerous new collectors to the hobby. Many of us are passionate serial collectors, driven by our nostalgia for sports cards from our youth. For some, collecting is viewed as an investment due to the rarity and market trends, with Football, Hockey, Basketball, and Baseball cards holding significant value, particularly older sets and rookie cards. In conclusion, if you're seeking an enjoyable way to engage with fantastic individuals and explore a different aspect of your beloved sport, card collecting could be the perfect fit for you.
